Hello Everyone!
Welcome back to this weeks post for More Than Medicine!
When my blog first was getting started in September of 2023, one of the first posts
I made was about podcasts that got me through PA school!
Well, today's post is going to be about my pleasure podcasts that I like to listen to when I need a break from my medical podcast content! In the car, if I have the choice to listen to the radio or listen to a podcast, I listen to a podcast (or lately, an audiobook). I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I love the feeling of multitasking, and feeling like I am doing something beneficial with my time, even if I am doing something as simple as cleanings the house, going for a walk, folding laundry, or, even driving.
I really started listening to non-medical podcasts when I landed my first job as a PA-C in March of 2022. At that time, I was listening to a lot of practical podcasts regarding finances and life hacks, essentially. But then when I moved into my house In March of 2023, I spent a lot of my time packing, unpacking, and organizing listening to true crime podcasts. In my opoinion, these podcasts were just as addicting as a binge-worthy Netflix show!
I know there are thousands of podcasts out there, but I figured I would share with you all my favorite pleasure podcasts. Hopefully, through this post you will give podcasts a chance if you're not already a fan or you find your new favorite podcast to listen to!
The Deck
This podcast is based off the premise of law enforcement agencies replacing the faces of traditional playing cards with images of missing and murdered people, which are then distributed amongst inmates hoping to get new information on these cold cases. Each episode is about a different deck of cards from a different state. What I enjoy about this podcast is how easy it is to get lost in these cases AND how convenient they are to listen to as each episode is about 30 minutes long. When listening to this podcast while I was unpacking after moving, I would FLY through SO many episodes in a day, that I caught up to the current weekly episode and was waiting around for the next to air. I constantly found myself wanting more.
Ashley Flowers is a great host, and makes the podcast enjoyable to listen to. Honestly, I feel as pleasurable as this podcast is to listen to, it also taught me a lot about how messed up the world can be. If you are a little naive like me, listening to this podcast will educate you to be aware of your surrrounds and the people around you 24/7!
Erika Taught Me
I'm sure we've all watched at least one of Erika's TikTok or Instagram videos sharing her tips and tricks about how we can save our money in addition to other useful hacks. Well, she also has her own podcast! I've been listening since the first episode dropped. Erika's podcast is practical and is quite literally meant for anyone. She will teach you how to negotiate, will share advice from a self-made billionaire, educate you on the basics of investing, and (my favorite episode) give you hacks on how to fly smartly by knowing the 'fine print" before you travel, so you don't get screwed over by your airline. No matter your education, age, financial status, etc, there is something on this podcast for everyone.
One reason I find this podcast addictingly easy to listen to is the fact that things are broken down so they are comprehendable. If you're like me, and learning the basics of investing or learning how to achieve the confidence to negotiate the salary or contract that you deserve, breaking the content down to the basics so it is easy to implement makes a world of difference. It is because of this podcast I learned how to take advantage of credit cards and points to my advantage. I was able to get a FREE IPad by redeeming my credit card points, just to name one example. I am currently saving my my points toward a trip to Japan planned for 2025.
Creator Club
As discussed in my last post, I am really a novice when it comes to having a blog, and growing my very small instagram account and following. Each day I try to stay dedicated and put in thoughtful work toward achieving this intention (also discussed in my 2024 New Year Intentions post... check it out!!!!)
I don't mess around with the different apps that are advertised to 'grow my following', or any of the other nonsense advertised online. Ironically, I feel a lot of them are just a ploy to get your money and for you to buy a subscription you don't need. There's endless content about growing accounts, becoming a blogger, being a successful influencer, etc, and therefore it feels overwhelming. Often I feel I read one thing that leads me to another, and this cycles continues until I'm 5ft deep into the rabbit hole, left with a bunch of wasted time and really no knew knowledge on how to be better.
Katie's podcast is helpful as she's been content creating for years (before it was popular or cool) and she breaks things down into attainable tips and tricks. I feel she teaches me so much after each podcast, and she keeps me in the loop with what's new within social media. My life is busy, so to be able to get reliable and helpful information from her, knowing her tips and tricks have helped me tremendously thus far, is something worthwhile to listen to in my opinion. Having her advice in audio cuts down on my screen time and allows me to maintain productivity doing other things, like tasks around my house. If you are a aspiring content creator like me, or even a well established one, Katie will surely teach you something new.
Counter Clock
This is another audiochuck true crime podcast, but this one is hosted by Delia D'Ambra. This podcast "goes back in time to investigate the moment when the clock stopped". Essentially, each season is going back in time to retell the stories of a true crime case. The podcast builds on the original investigations, by performing new interviews closest to the victims, and re-reviewing all of the court documents, transcripts, depositions, etc. for each case. Each episode is about 20-30 minutes, and slowly builds on the episode before. It is easy to get lost in each case, but I will warn you, if you don't pay close attention while listening, you may get lost along the way or miss important information. I found this podcast last Spring while gardening, and I binged through the first few seasons quickly.
Park Predators
Delia D'Ambra hosts this podcast, too. It's another true crime podcast, but this one talks about crime happenning in National Forests. It's very easy to listen as the content is addicting. These episodes last between 30-50 minutes. I find myself easily binging these episodes on long drives or doing household chores. My boyfriend and I love hiking, and love visiting national parks. This is what initially peaked my attention in this series. You would not expect such bad things to happen in such beautiful places. Listening to these stories remind me to always be aware of my surroundings, and to never let your guard down no matter how seemingly safe you may think the place you're in is.
The Deck Investigates
This is a branch off of The Deck. It is deeply investigating a card regarding a woman named Darlene Holst who was kidnapped in the daytime from her own home. It is a CRAZY story, honestly, and addicting to listen to. If you enjoy true crime and helping advocate for families who still don't have answers, this is a great story to listen to and become involved with! Ashley Flowers is the podcast host, and through her podcast they are advocating for justice and answers for Darlene's family. This entire season of the podcast is dedicated to this one story, so it's easy to get invested and binge. I listened to this when I moved ~1 year ago. I had this on in the background while packing/unpacking and it definitely made the time go by faster. This podcast is what started me on the journey of binging true-crime podcasts!
Dr. Death
I first listened to the very first season of this podcast when it came out years ago. Now it has released 3 additional seasons, to total 4 altogether. The stories of this podcast highlight Dr. Christopher Duntsch, Dr. Fata, Dr. Serhat, and Dr. Macchiarini. Whether you work in the medical field or not, these stories are intriguing and honestly crazy. Crazy to think that stories like these can happen within the medical system, and affect the lives of real people. You will listen to these podcasts and retrospectively inquire, how the hell did all of this happen? If you're intrested in listening to a devastatingly sad, but "keep you on the edge of your seat" story, this podcast is for you.
Thanks for reading, everyone! I would love to hear if you've ever listened to any of these podcasts, and if so, what your thoughts were about them. Additionally, I am always interested in finding a new, great podcast to listen to! If you have a favorite podcast that is not mentioned above, please share in the comments below so I can get to listening! 😍

Manny ❤️
